Urban Sketching:
People and Cars in
a Cityscape

The fundamental and universal question of the urban landscape is the following: How to insert people and cars into cityscapes? And how to do it with ease? Believe me, this is possible, and I know the ultimate secret. I will even gladly share it with you. In fact, everything is easy - you just need to reduce a complex problem to a simple one.

I am sure that after this tutorial you will be able to draw any number of people and cars in your watercolors without any problems.

List of materials:


Paper: 100% cotton 300 gsm (140 pounds) Rough (Torchon) paper from Saunders, Arches, or Fabriano Artistico, size around 11 x 15 inches or 22 x 15 inches.


Brush:

  • Round paintbrush (or mop), squirrel, goat or equivalent (approximately #12). Chinese calligraphy brush (available in our online store) is highly recommended.

  • Strong hair flat brush, goat or synthetic. I will use 7-Line Flat goat brush (available in our online store). These brushes (5 or 7 lines) are highly recommended. Soft squirrel brushes are not recommended.


Paint:

I highly recommend Daniel Smith watercolor in tubes. In case of impossibility, you can use any other professional brand. Small sets for travel are NOT recommended.


For this lesson, you can use any colors – it doesn't matter.


Masking tape, any board to stretch paper on, and paper towels.
